America’s Education System has drastically changed from the 17th century up until now, many events have occurred that have shaped and made what education is today. The concept of education reform was very much alive during the 17th century when educators developed new ways of thinking about education. During the 17th century dame schools became common. Dames were respected women who usually learned to read and write without schooling and turned their homes into schools. Dame schools were essentially the first American elementary school and virtually consisted of all boys, girls usually stayed home and learned homemaking skills, they were allowed to attend the Dame schools but the curriculum was much different. Franklin believed that science could solve the problems of human life and that knowledge came from the senses, observation, and experimentation. He wanted education to provide knowledge that would prepare people to make a contribution to society. A famous quote by Benjamin Franklin was the motto for the academy, â€Å"Tell me and I forget, Teach me and I remember, Involve me and I learn.† I couldn’t agree more with the whole philosophy of this academy, it changed the way people thought about education and finally allowed students to have a decision in their learning. Nineteenth century american education is often referred to as â€Å"The Common School Period.† It was during this century that education went from being completely private to being available to everyone. By 1830 common schools were created, which were free community supported elementary schools for all children, free public education was a new concept and widely debated.
